Akadama is a granular soil originating from Tochigi Prefecture in North Tokyo. This soil originally consists of volcanic ash and contains no fertilisers.
It is an exceptionally suitable substrate for mixing with bonsai soil. Akadama can even be used as a pure bonsai substrate thanks to its granular structure, which provides plenty of space for oxygen—beneficial for healthy root growth and branching.
In addition, Akadama binds exceptionally well to fertilisers and nutrients and retains its properties, even when it partially breaks down. It also has moisture-regulating capacity and acts as a buffer, resulting in a stable acidity around pH 6.
In short, it forms an excellent growing medium for many different types of bonsai.
